Was Egyptian biotechnology researcher Reem Hamed killed in France? a question which has been repeating through the last 24 hours at all the social media in Egypt.
Some domestic media mention that Egyptian biotechnology researcher Reem Hamed received threatens, and she had written some of that on her Facebook account. But they did not give any one name or institutions.
So, “Food & Climate” platform has seen the Egyptian biotechnology researcher Reem Hamed account on Facebook, but did not find anything. Her account was a mixture of prayers and expressions of distress about life outside Egypt.
An account has name “Egyptian dad jokes” said: “Dr. Reem Hamed, a scientist and PhD student in the field of biotechnology, unfortunately passed away today and there is no forensic evidence about the cause of death. It is said that she was assassinated in France. A few weeks ago, Dr. Reem posted these posts and they were completely deleted. She said that she was being monitored and that materials were being spread inside her apartment that would raise the heart rate. The assassination incident is not new to us, unfortunately. It brings back the memory of Dr. Samira Moussa, in 1952, and of course, nothing has been confirmed yet”.
Mysterious circumstances
One of local media said: “Death of Egyptian researcher Reem Hamed in France amid mysterious circumstances”.
And the name of Egyptian researcher #Reem_Hamed topped search engines and social media, after her death was announced in mysterious circumstances in France.
According to Egyptian media, Reem Hamed is 29 years old, and she had traveled to France to obtain a doctorate in the field of “biotechnology” and genetics.
Reem had sparked widespread controversy due to posts on Facebook, in which she revealed that she had been harassed and pursued by unknown persons whose identities she did not clarify, but she hinted that they may be linked to her employer in France”.
Reem Hamed indicated in her posts that she had been harassed and always felt that she was being followed and monitored, in addition to attempts to hack her electronic devices.
Many social media users linked Reem’s posts to her mysterious death, confirming that the death was caused by an agent.
Reem’s death was announced without clarifying the cause of death so far, while the French authorities continue to investigate the circumstances.
Monitoring investigations
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said on Sunday it is closely monitoring the ongoing investigations into the death of Egyptian researcher Reem Hamed, who passed away in France on Thursday, according “Ahram online”.
The ministry noted that upon being notified of Hamed’s death, the Egyptian Consulate General in Paris has been in contact with French authorities to seek information on the investigation.
“Upon learning of the incident, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty directed the Consulate General in Paris to closely monitor the investigation procedures with the French authorities and to obtain the official report from the relevant French agencies to determine the cause of death,” read the statement.
The ministry has also instructed the consulate to expedite the process of obtaining a death certificate and arranging for the repatriation of Hamed’s body to Egypt once the investigation is complete.
The Ministry expressed its deepest sorrow over the passing of the deceased and extended its heartfelt condolences to her family.
Following the news of her death, alleged posts from her Facebook account speaking about her suspicions of being under surveillance went viral.
Nader Hamed, the deceased researcher’s brother, has urged social media users to refrain from discussing any details related to the death until confirmed information is available.
He emphasized that there is currently no criminal evidence and that any speculation could potentially harm Reem’s rights.
